How to manually rollback to a previous version after an Installation Manager upgrade of SurePassID Authentication Server (SPAS)

Learn how to manually roll back a SurePassID Authentication Server (SPAS) installation after an Installation Manager upgrade, restore pre-upgrade application files, and validate services without changing the SQL database.

Purpose

Use this procedure to restore the SPAS application files to their pre-upgrade versions if the upgrade fails and automatic rollback does not complete successfully. This procedure does not restore a snapshot or full-system backup. Do not restore or modify the SQL database: the schema updates are backward-compatible and remain in place.

Before starting

  • Confirm the SPINSTMGR backup ZIP is available and contains the pre-upgrade SPAS installation folder.
  • Identify the active SPAS installation path and matching backup folder. Example backup location: C:\Program Files (x86)\SurePassID Corp\SurePassID_System_backup_<timestamp>.zip\SurePassID Authentication Server 24.3 (backup).
  • Schedule the service interruption. Stopping IIS affects all IIS-hosted sites on the server, not only SPAS; coordinate with owners of any other sites.
  • Keep the SPINSTMGR backup ZIP until SPAS and the required integrations pass validation.

Rollback steps

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and stop IIS by running iisreset /stop.
  2. Make a file copy of the current SPAS installation folder in a separate location. This preserves the upgraded files for troubleshooting; it is not a full-system backup.
  3. Extract the pre-upgrade SPAS folder from the SPINSTMGR backup ZIP to a temporary staging location. Confirm it contains the expected SPAS component subfolders, such as ApiServer, MfaServer, Saml2Idp, and ServicePass.
  4. Replace the contents of the active SPAS installation folder with the contents of the extracted pre-upgrade folder. Restore it to the original installation path, for example: C:\Program Files (x86)\SurePassID Corp\SurePassID Authentication Server 24.3.
  5. Do not restore or change the SQL database. The upgraded schema remains in place.
  6. Start IIS by running iisreset /start from the elevated Command Prompt.
  7. Log in to SPAS and confirm it is operational. Test the applicable integrations, such as WLM, PAM, RADIUS, ADFS, and the SharePoint Employee Portal.

If validation fails

Stop IIS and contact SurePassID Support with the error details. Keep the current-folder copy and SPINSTMGR backup ZIP available. Do not attempt a database restore as part of this file rollback.
